TAG-24 — Information

The emerging new Traditional Architecture, Urbanism, and Building Arts Movement exists because of its universal resonance with the public. The central annual conference, The Traditional Architecture Gathering, TAG is an organic, consensus-based event that emerged in the early 2000s and went online during COVID. Hosted by the Classic Planning Institute Stoa, TAG-24, the 11th such meeting and the 4th online, will be a cross-branded with the similarly named Traditional Architecture Group of the Royal Institute of British Architects—TAG-UK. The hybrid TAG-24 will take place on April 12-13-14, 2024, with one live venue in the UK, and possibly one in the US. Themed, “From Romantic to Pragmatic,” TAG-24 will feature the uniquely human Hand-Eye-Creative Connection inherent in traditional architecture and urbanism, their design, and construction—and bring to the fore matters of resource stewardship, the coming together of a movement, and the urgency of the times. Day 1, “Bricks and Mortar,” will be about The How and Why of Enduring Settlements, beginning with a TAG-UK session coming from London. An Urban Neuroscience session led by Ann Sussman will be followed by a panel discussing The Architect's Hand and another speculating on Hands, Futurism, and AI. There will be sessions on The Aesthetic City, a Students and Youth session, and one devoted to the new traditional architecture’s Academic Pioneers. Day 2, “Hands,” will Intersect The Building Arts, Durability, and Socioeconomic Well-Being. Although somewhat speculative, it will have architects, craftspersons, and professionals connecting dots in hitherto unexplored ways. Opening with the idea that The Future of Technology Lies in the Hands, the day will cover topics such as Timeless Durability and Timeless Practice, hear various Building Arts Masters discuss their work, enjoy a presentation by La Table Ronde de l’Architecture, and celebrate young leadership. Day 3, Following a tribute to the giants on the shoulders of whom we stand, “Forests," will look ahead to stewarding resources and climate change for homeostatic urbanism. We will discuss Urban Adaptability and Resilience, and say Goodbye to Futurama for real, durable urbanism. There will be talks on Why Classic Traffic Planning Works and how Memory and Place link us to viable urban futures. The Classic Planning Academy will be presented, as well as the leaders of the International Architectural Uprising and the leading institutions of the movement. TAG-24 will climax with presentations by our favorite speakers, Leon Krier and Andres Duany.
